Hello, I’m Cass.

Thanks for popping by my Substack! I already know you’re a wonderful human because the truth is, all garden-loving people are kind, generous, and fabulous all-around humans (in my experience, anyway!)

Why The Sentimental Gardener?

I started The Sentimental Gardener to help make sense of the magic that is gardening and how it changed my life. See, I'm an ordinary, everyday gardener. Well, maybe a bit more than that — an enthusiastic everyday gardener. I don't have a degree in horticulture or years of gardening experience. I'm a busy mum of two who runs a digital marketing business and finds time to get out in the garden in short bursts between the items on my to-do list. But, I make up for what I don't have in gardening expertise with an insatiable curiosity about how things grow and a heart of sentimentality.

I feel things deeply, and I love anything with a story attached to it, which is the foundation of how I garden. I live in Melbourne, Australia and garden in a rental space. My garden is full of pot plants, cuttings, and experiments. I'm trying to create something beautiful within the constraints of not owning a space.

The Substack & Podcast

What started as written reflections has grown into something more. The Sentimental Gardener now lives in two forms:

The Substack: Where I share my personal garden journey, reflections on what plants teach us about life, and stories from my own greenspace.

The Podcast: Where I talk with curious and passionate plant people about how gardens become more than just collections of plants, they become collections of meaning. From accidental gardeners who found their calling through unexpected paths to those who've healed through nurturing green things, these conversations explore what grows in us when we grow things.

New episodes released fortnightly wherever you get your podcasts.

Our world today is geared towards collecting more: more experiences, more money, more clothes, more content, more information, and on and on it goes. But I don't want more (unless it's plants!). I want to connect … and connect beyond the surface level and go deep, find meaning, and share that.

My hope in creating The Sentimental Gardener is that it will give you a chance to stop and reflect on what has been in your life and how you choose to live intentionally from now on. Join a community of like-minded, heart-felt people who love connecting with the natural world and others like them to make our lives richer.
